Food: The King's Arms, Hanwell

by - 00:25

Recently I was invited down to The King's Arms in Hanwell, to try their menu out. I was very excited as I feel as though west London is an area of London I tend to neglect. So upon receiving their invite I was extremely eager to head on over and explore.

As this was a bit further afield than where I work and live, I decided the best day to head down was on a Wednesday after work as I could get the train directly from Westminster. Upon arrival, me my friend had worked up quite an appetite, which we had been lucky to have done as you are about to find out.

The pub itself is a restored pub, who specialise in dough and hops. They offer a selection of pizzas, signature doughnuts and have an extensive beer selection. The pub also host a huge array of events that range from quizzes to live music nights and they even have a night where you can bring your own vinyl.  When we first got there, there were only a few people in the pub, but as the night went on  more and more people showed up to watch the football game on the tv. Now, I don't know much about football, so I am not going to pretend that I knew what was going on, but everyone watching the match was full of high spirits and there was a lot of lively cheering going on. So evidently the team that everyone was supporting was doing well.

Anyways, on to the food. We were served by Ben who was ever so friendly and helpful throughout the night. We first had two glasses of fizz ( Vy's choosing) which I needed desperately after a long day.
For our food, Ben first recommended that we get the bread platter which consisted of warm garlic flatbread and a selection of dips. I was thrilled that the dips consisted of guacamole, baba ganoush and hummus. I had been craving some baba ganoush a few days prior and I went to lengths to try get some but every store I knew who sold it was sold out. So naturally I was so sad, so thank you to The King's Arms for unintentionally solving my baba ganoush dilemma.

Look at dat bread though... mmmm

Honestly, the bread platter was nothing but incredible. The breads were warm and so so soft, garlicy and oh so delicious. I powered my way right through the guac, which is probably the best guac in the whole of London? If you know me, you know how much I rate the guac at chipotle, and how I feel like nothing could contest theirs. Well I suppose it is time for chipotle's guac to slide on over, because this was truly incredible guac. Guac lovin' aside, the baba ganoush and hummus were equally as delicious. I honestly powered my way through the whole thing.. I was so hungry and it was just phenomenal.

Admittedly, after the starter Vys and I were starting to feel a bit full and when our main courses arrived were wondering how on earth we were going to finish all our food as the portions were huge! Vyvy got a fennel pizza and I on the other hand ordered a veggie calzone without the cheese. Ben asked if I wanted anything in replacement of the cheese and I told him to tell the chef to put whatever he thought would taste good in the calzone.  Until the  moment it arrived, I had never had a calzone before in my life and you're probably wondering how on Earth I even achieved 25 years of life without having one. The answer quite honestly is that I have no idea? But this calzone was INCREDIBLE. The chef had gone ahead and put a huge array of vegetables in my calzone. There were HEAPS of spinach ( yum), mushrooms, courgettes, red onions and even olives.

Whilst I was feeling super full and Vys struggled to eat all of her pizza (she took the rest of her food away for breakfast the next day) I powered my way through slowly as it was super delicious. I truly recommend asking if the chef can do this for you as well if you're at their pub. It would be good if the pub offers a vegan cheese alternative for their pizzas in the future, but without the cheese was absolutely fabulous anyways, so to me it didn't bother me at all.  A good thing to also note is that each of their pizzas can be made gluten free. So there is really a pizza for everybody at The King's Arms.

Unfortunately, we were far too full for dessert so we didn't get a chance to sample any. I wouldn't have been able to eat the Nuttella Doughnuts anyways, but Vyvy was far too full to sample them on my behalf.

Overall, I was super impressed with the service at the pub, loved the food (best guac ever) and the best ( and first) calzone I have ever had. I am sure that I will be coming back to the pub in the future and recommend that everyone should head down and get that calzone and guac in your life.
